Camí de Ronda – Hiking along the wild Costa Brava: the Camí de Ronda is more than just a coastal hiking trail - it is a window into the soul of the Costa Brava. On old smugglers' paths and former patrol routes, the trail winds its way sometimes spectacularly over cliffs, sometimes dreamily through small fishing villages. Always accompanied by the sound of the sea, the scent of pine trees and the vastness of the Mediterranean.

Here you will come across hidden bays, turquoise-blue water, rugged cliffs and culinary discoveries. Get ready for a route that not only winds through the landscape, but also through the history of Catalonia. I thought the tour was fantastic - chapeau!

Cami de Ronda

The Camí de Ronda is a hiking trail along the coast of the Costa Brava. There are 3 variants between 43km and 219km, ranging in difficulty from easy to medium. The majority of the hiking trails consist of narrow paths that can only be negotiated on foot. There are also ascents and descents, some of which require some skill. Other sections, however, are completely flat and easy to walk. In addition, the Camí de Ronda can be hiked 365 days a year.

Cami de Ronda journey

Travelling to the Cami de Ronda is very straightforward. There are 3 options with different starting points. For all starting points, I recommend travelling from Barcelona, alternatively there is also the airport in Girona. From Barcelona, you can take the bus or Bold/Uber taxi to the respective starting point. Below you will find all the important information for your journey:

Overview of the variants for your journey:

Variant 1 - Linear route (easy): Starting point in Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Variant 2 - Cami de Ronda Classic (medium T3): Starting point in Blanes

Variant 3 - Circular route from Girona (medium): Starting point in Girona.

Aeroplane: The nearest airport is Barcelona Airport (BCN). If you're looking for cheap flights, I can highly recommend Skyscanner - a first-class app that gives you a quick overview of the best flight offers.

Bus: There are regular bus connections from the bus station in Barcelona ‘Estación de Autobuses Barcelona Nord’ to the respective starting points. I can highly recommend the OMIO app for bookings. From the airport, take the underground to Barcelona or alternatively a taxi.

Taxi: Uber and Bold work wonderfully. There is a taxi rank in Tossa de Mar https://taxistossa.com/en/

As always, I recommend my video about the tour:

Cami de Ronda route

The Camí de Ronda is a historic coastal hiking trail on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, which stretches for around 150 kilometres from Blanes to Portbou on the French border. Originally used by coastguards and fishermen, today it delights hikers with breathtaking views, rugged cliffs, hidden coves (calas) and charming coastal towns such as Tossa de Mar, Calella de Palafrugell and Cadaqués.

The route is divided into easy-to-walk stages, some natural, some paved, often leading spectacularly over rocky outcrops. Depending on the section, it can be wild and lonely or relaxed and family-friendly, mainly at difficulty levels T1 and T2 and on some sections at T3. You can stay overnight in B&Bs or hotels right by the sea.

Remember to insure your trip well – because a fall or other typical hiking injury can quickly result in high rescue costs. Auras Insurance offers you worldwide hiking and trekking insurance, specially designed for active travellers.

Use the discount code CJCOM to get 10% off your insurance.

Camí de ronda with children

Linear route for beginners and children: This route is particularly suitable for anyone who only hikes occasionally or is travelling with children. The route can be completed all year round. I completed the hike with my 10-year-old son.

Trail markings: The trail markings for the linear route (for beginners and children) are based on the GR91 and look red/white as shown in the following pictures:

The Cami de Ronda Classic is occasionally marked in yellow. Sometimes, however, there is only a yellow or blue dot. Navigation via smartphone is required. There are slightly exposed passages in places.

Cami de Ronda best time

If you want to explore the Camí de Ronda on the Costa Brava, February to May and the end of September to November are just the right times. The temperatures are pleasantly mild, it smells of flowers or damp earth and pine trees, the beaches are quiet and the light is simply magical - whether in spring or golden autumn.

It is particularly beautiful in April and early May, when the cliffs are in full bloom and you have the Atlantic almost to yourself. In autumn, everything glows in warm tones and the late sunsets conjure up a special atmosphere.

Avoid the high season

In summer - especially between mid-June and mid-September - it can be quite strenuous along the Cami de Ronda. Many sections are open, without shade, and the sandy ground heats up quickly. Temperatures often climb well above 30 °C during the day, and hiking becomes a battle against the heat. These months are more suitable for swimming than for long-distance hiking.

Watch out for coastal weather!

Even though the climate is generally mild, the weather can change quickly on the Costa Brava. Especially in spring and autumn, there is often a strong wind and short, intense rain showers are not uncommon.

So my tip: make sure you pack light but weatherproof clothing. Something that has proved particularly useful: A breathable rain poncho that doesn't flap even in a storm, a windblocker, ideally with a hood - there are good quality ones for men and women, and good sun protection, even if it's cloudy - the UV radiation on the coast should not be underestimated.

I would highly recommend a breathable rain poncho and a windblocker (available for men and women)

I would highly recommend a breathable rain poncho

Cami de Ronda Costa Brava - further information

I have put together some useful information about the Cami de Ronda for you below.

Money: I was able to pay cashless everywhere. However, as always, I recommend taking some cash with you.

Mobile phone reception: I had continuous network coverage.

Catering: There are local shops in every village.

Taxi: Bolt and Uber are not always available. In an emergency, you have to use local taxis.

There is a taxi rank in Tossa de Mar: https://taxistossa.com/en/

Water: There are hardly any water sources along the route. I managed well with 2 litres of water per day. The tap water is enriched with chlorine, which you can clearly taste. According to my research, it is drinkable, but it gave me slight heartburn. I would recommend bought water.

Cami de Ronda packing list

Here I recommend the most important hiking equipment that I own, have tested myself and have also bought myself. I pay a lot of attention to the weight and quality of my equipment. The equipment should simply feel good on longer tours and also be light. I can recommend the equipment for women because my wife uses it and it is basically the same as the equipment for men.

Note: Please keep in mind that the packing list is general and you will have to adapt it depending on the season and your needs!
